The Cardiff Science Festival, which took place this year from 28th February – 3rd March, aimed to inspire and educate on how science, technology, engineering and maths affect our everyday lives.
The AE Cardiff Hub hosted a stand on 2nd March entitled “Eat SMART. Eat Food from the Oceans!” informing visitors about different foods from the oceans and how we can be more ecologically efficient by choosing to eat different types of seafood. Over 80 visitors attended on the day.
Large-scale infographics were displayed to convey the key messages of the Food from the Oceans reports and leaflets were available to take away.
Our stand, aimed at families, included colouring activities for children, with all colouring materials highlighting the main messages of the Food from the Oceans reports. We also invited visitors to create an under-the-sea scene on our huge blackboard. All children who joined the event were given a sea-themed sticker as a reward.
We conducted a fun opinion survey on whether the public would be willing to eat or try either jellyfish or seaweed. The results indicated that the general public may be more experimental with their tastes than the average supermarket caters for. 85% of our visitors who came to the stand said they would eat or try eating seaweed whilst 60% said they would eat or try eating jellyfish.
